Enclosure Types

Type 1 (General Purpose)

Type 1 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily where not exposed to unusual service conditions to provide protection against accidental contact with enclosed apparatus.

Type 2 (Driptight)

Type 2 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against limited amounts of falling water and dirt.

Type 3 (Weatherproof)

Type 3 enclosures are intended for outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust, rain, sleet and external ice formation.

Type 3R (Raintight)

Type 3R enclosures protect against entrance of water from a beating rain. Suitable for general outdoor application not requiring sleetproof.

Type 4 (Watertight)

Type 4 enclosures are intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing water and hose-directed water during cleaning operations, etc.

Type 4X

Same provisions as Type 4. In addition, are corrosion resistant.

Type 6

Submersible, watertight, dust-tight, and sleet (ice) resistant indoor and outdoor enclosures.

Type 7-8-9 & 10

These enclosures are for use in hazardous locations.

Type 11 (Acid/Fume Resistant)

Type 11 enclosures provide oil immersion of apparatus such that it is suitable for application where equipment is subject to acid or other corrosive fumes.

Type 12

Type 12 enclosures are intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against dust, falling dirt, noncorrosive liquids, and coolant seepage.
